I completely understand and agree with you, being the only person in the room and being token takes enormous amounts of energy, patience and tolerance. When you have been this person for so long, knowing you were this person, there comes a time when you cannot continue and need to be lifted up rather than constantly lifting others.
For me the veil was lifted in May last year, when I realised that for all of my life I have suffered the same injustices as my Black brothers and sisters. But chose to ignore it, push it down, don't make a fuss and work hard as advised by my well meaning parents.
But now I'm righteously angry and with the last breath in my body, will not allow racism to continue to oppress us, our children and our children's children.
Rebecca I would be honoured to take the baton from you, to be the only Black person in the room and to be token. I will do this if it helps to open the door for our younger Black brothers and sisters, to join us at the table and take a seat.
