Black women are the world’s most oppressed people group without exception.

As a Black man I know what it is to be Black, but with my male privilege I will never know what it is to live as a Black woman. Because I don’t have this lived experience, means that I should do my utmost to understand and and use my privilege to elevate and promote opportunities for Black women.

Now don’t get me wrong, all women suffer discrimination and prejudice as well as harassment and abuse within and outside of the workplace, but this oppression increases for women based on the level of melanin in her skin. Colourism means that Black women, especially the darkest of Black women, are the most oppressed of all.

When you couple this with other intersections, the oppression faced by Black women increases exponentially.

If we can focus on the systems and structures that hold back and oppress Black women in general and,

♿ those with physical and/or psychological disabilities

👩🏾‍🎓 young and early in career, middle aged and older Black women

🏳️‍🌈 Lesbian and Trans Black women (and Trans Black men too)

we will find the systems and structures that hold back all people. We will identify where we need to change these structures and systems. We will find out where to focus our investments.

We will then be able make changes that benefit everyone.

But we must focus on Black women first!!!!

So when I say “Black Women’s Lives Matter”, what I’m saying is that when we focus on the lives and careers of Black women then all lives at all intersections will matter.
